Day 46

August 28, 2014

Car accident.

Today was a full range of emotions. Started out with the regular long commute, followed by me falling asleep at the wheel, followed by getting into a nasty rear ending accident, followed by nervously trying to exchange information, followed by an intimidating cop, followed by, a shit ton of cassette QC at work, followed by not knowing where the fuck my car was towed for about 2 hours, followed by complete self hatred and depression, followed by contemplating suicide, followed by getting some ice cream with S**, followed by sorting everything out with the car mechanics and insurance, followed by joking about suicide, followed by maniacally laughing at S** for leaving her at the best cliff hanger episode of Kill la Kill XD.

Best text exchange ever.
Me: So... it finally happened. Got into an accident.
S**: Annnd that's your wake up call. Drive safer you dork!

Really...? wake up call -_-?.

I'm also really thankful for my work. They were incredibly understanding about the fact that I needed some time to call people and needing some time tomorrow to figure out crap. Really cool people.

My dad was also not mad at all. More thankful that nothing happened to me, which was how I expected him to react, I think.

This is truly a wake up call though. I really need to move closer to work. I slept quite a bit during weekend (granted only 12 to 6 on Sunday -> Monday). However, even days when I don't wake up to an alarm (the days I go into work at around 10, because they're cool with that), I still feel incredibly sleepy 40 minutes into the commute.

In the end though, I can't blame the commute. I can't blame not being able to sleep right. I can't blame depression. I can't blame anything other than myself. I got careless and irresponsible. I should have gotten a little more sleep. I should have prepared myself some tea to keep me more awake. I should have moved closer to work over a month ago. However, even though it's all my fault, there's no need to think of suicide. I just have to learn from this and keep going. Float on.

Day 44

August 24, 2014

I got really bored and learned how to use SketchUp and revamped K***'s floor plans :3. This is what the new place will possibly look like.

Day 43

August 23, 2014

>fucked up and got a screw stuck in a chassis
>gotta rip the screw out and tap a new hole
>metal flying everywhere -> better put on safety glasses
> ~6pm
>coworker comes over
>*loud noises of grinding metal*
>"Hey, what time are you leaving?"
>I peek around the corner. Goggles on, drill in one hand,
>"eh... in a bit."
>coworker has a "...the fuck?" look on his face
>"ok..." /walks away
took me a moment to realize that my job doesn't normally involve safety glasses and power tools.

It feels nice that they actually trust me with those tools :3.

Day 42

August 22, 2014

Last Friday, I started moving devices up to the CEO's office for storage since he's away for vacation. We now have about 20+ devices in there. You cannot stand next to the window unless you move a bit of furniture around :3. There's still space enough for someone to walk in there. I hope I can change that before he comes back >:).

I've officially ran out of stuff to do in all departments today. I finished up my own work, asked shipping, asked R&D, asked inventory management... They literally ran out of stuff for me to do. My solution: Start taking online classes!

I found this amazing website through the TED talks, called edX.org. I'm currently auditing an intro to ECE class presented by a professor from MIT. It's kind of nice... but I forgot how to calculus :C.

Ah... something funny...

One of the R&D jobs that I finished today involved making some filters (tedious, but something to do). One part involved using a scalpel to cut clear off some of the filter's excess membrane. My co-worker said something like: "Oh actually, you don't have to use the scalpel, I can do it later if you want. I don't want you to cut yourself."

I had to fight my hardest not let my inner Suzu-chan out and say: "I have a master's degree in biomedical engineering. I have ample experience using a cryostat cutter. And I've successfully done surgical operations on rats. AndI think I can handle a scalpel!"

More Suzu

I connect with short anime characters too much -_-

Day 39

April 17, 2014

>fixing a centrifuge
>putting it back together
>"Uh... K***, what are these screws for?"
>"Didn't I tell you? If you have extra pieces after fixing something, it isn't bad. You just made the machine more efficient since it never really needed those parts."

Today, K*** and I saved our company a couple thousands by fixing some lab devices :3. It was quite fun working with new machines.

Also, we're transferring the finished devices to our CEO's office since he's going on a vacation for  week. Next week's goal, make enough devices to cover all his windows.

Also, during my break time, I've been dabbling with google spreadsheets for my work schedule. The spreadsheet is based on a traditional 8hr work day and a 40 hr work week. I have to input time in and time out and it calculates: time worked, time over 8 hrs, time I should leave to meet 8hrs, time I should leave to use up past extra time, total hours worked in the week, total extra time that I can use up to meet the 40 hrs, etc. Kyle was looking at it yesterday, and today he jokingly said, "Wow, you got a lot of stuff there. Next thing you should put is the sun's position in the sky. Haha." I got a surprise for him tomorrow :3.

I'll post the spreadsheet sometime this weekend for people that have 40 hr work weeks. I still have a couple things I want to tweak.

Day 37

April 15, 2014

Blog started, because my memory is bad and lots of great things happen at work.

Biggest fuck up today. Yesterday I made 13 devices. The screw holes for all of them blew up. 13 device skins in the trash X_X. Not exactly my fault... There was a change in protocol since some screws were coming loose, so I was told to add Loctite. Funny thing about this Loctite... it eats through plastic. gg.

My reaction:

However, my boss, T***, is cool and said w.e. Learn from our mistakes.

The parts for the new device finally came in and T*** is now teaching me how to build them. They're a big pain, but I'll figure them out. I'll be in charge of writing the most efficient assembly protocol. Very excite.

Day 36

April 14, 2014

Skins for Device 1 finally came in! I exhausted the supplies for that one during my first week of work. Made 13 of them in an hour (since all the prep for them were done) and ran out of power supply boards. Left them all on D****'s desk (QC person). She'll have a nice surprise tomorrow morning.

Day 35

April 11, 2014

Officially ran out of stuff to do. 29 devices in stock (waiting for boxes... srsly they're just piled up and taking up space on my shelves :C). Prep done for the next 20+. Literally nothing I can do until more chassis come in... and even then, why would I need to make more devices . Hopefully the parts for the new device will come in tomorrow so I can work on a BoM and assembly protocol .

Day 34

April 10, 2014

>Fire alarm goes off
Me: So... where are we supposed to go?
J*****: WE GO TO ACAPULCO! MEET YA AT THE BAR!
Instant best co-worker ever

Day 30

April 4, 2014

Small talk with CEO: We've had a very big increase in production since you joined.

:D

Day 27

April 1, 2014

Filing a Failure Form for a bad chasis base:

Description of failure: wrong screw hole in the back

I have a dirty mind

Note from the future: Wow... I didn't post anything for a while

Day 18

March 19, 2014

K*** came back. L***** commented: "hey K***, you're back! The little guy has been managing without you, but we're glad you're back."
I AM THE SAME AGE AS K*** >-<.

sigh ...

Day 16

March 17, 2014

Flying solo today

Watching TED Talks while working. No one can really say anything since we're so far ahead of schedule. Life is good. I liked what K*** said Friday, "We could literally watch a movie right now, and no one would say anything."

Favorite one so far: http://www.ted.com/talks/guy_hoffman_robots_with_soul

Another really good one: http://www.ted.com/.../andrew_solomon_depression_the...

Jesus...

>"What's the ETA for the next machine?"

>"eh... about an hour, maybe?">2.5 hours later
>finally I finished
>/pick up device
>*jingle jangle*
>GAHH LOOSE SCREW X_X

Note from the future: in my defense... that device was a bitch.

Day 15

March 14, 2014

We're now going for a high score. We were able to pump out 8 today. New goal is 20. Actual demand for the devices won't be able to keep up >.> I wonder what will happen then.

I am so glad that I have such a cool coworker :D. I suggested using QC's computers, and I feel like normal people would be like, "meh." Instead he was like, "that's an awesome idea! We can make so many devices!" (When the parts came in yesterday, we were both legitimately excited).

Next week, I'll be flying solo for Monday and Tuesday, since he'll be starting part time. I'm a bit worried, but hopefully I'll be fine. I'll be prepping the parts so that on Wednesday we might reach a new high score :3.

Day 14

March 13, 2014

Parts are in :D!

Day 13

March 12, 2014

I did inventory all day. Best part single parts packed into single boxes... So much waste. By the end of the day, I made a spreadsheet of the BoM, which told us how many machines we could build.

In other news, we're going to be starting work on a new device. Also, COO asked me if I would move closer to **** when I started full time . Pretty much all set for a while. Yay.

Day 12

March 11, 2014

K***: So when are the parts that were supposed to come yesterday coming in?
L****: Friday.
K***: ok, we'll expect it on Monday.

Day 11

March 10, 2014

http://youtu.be/W4CCCGYyn30

So we've basically still don't have some crucial parts for building devices yet . We did get some stuff to work with, which is good though. However, this happened:

I'm troubleshooting a device I had made earlier that didn't pass QC (dismantle, put new part in, reassemble, send back to QC). I finished the device and went to the laptop to put in some notes about the device on excel (this is something only me and K*** do in order to keep things organized). Then, surprise visit from CEO and investor >.>. I look like I'm just chilling at the computer doing nothing (since the excel sheet is not protocol). He says, "and this is the assembly section, where F****** should be assembling things."

>.> shit shit, freaking out. CEO guy goes over to this black box that we usually use to cover parts of the pre-assembled device to run (needs darkness). "F******, is this a device running?" "Uh... no, that's just a box." (idk why, but it came out really matter-of-factly >.>).

Investor says, "I was hoping to see some of the components." I said, "well, we've been waiting for parts to come in, so we haven't been able to build anything all day." CEO: ">.>, uh yeah, that usually happens in this industry."

foot -> mouth

Day 10

March 7, 2014

Some supplies finally came in so we were able to make a couple of devices in the morning. Plot twist: we ran out of zip ties. Fucking... zip ties...

Luckily, the new shipment arrived a little later.

We're still pretty low on other supplies though. K*** and I are just ripping through them. Most of the prep is already done, and we keep running out of supplies for those. Once the new power boards come in, we'll just be pumping them out so fast that QC won't know what to do! *_*

Day 6

March 3, 2014

Rant:

Hourly wages promotes laziness and inactivity. Apart from customer service jobs, what is the point of hourly wages? Specifically in positions where you need to get shit done (ex. assemble # devices). I could: 1. figure out the fastest way to produce devices or 2. do it as slow as possible to accumulate hours. When the only factor controlling wage is time, you will want to maximize time instead of productivity. Unless I get noticed, there's no reason to be faster at my job (thankfully, my manager is awesome and brags about me lots).

Today, I was in the middle of finishing one of my devices, but it was 4:30 (I work 8-4:30). My co-worker immediately left. Normally, I would have stayed a little longer and finished the device, but this time, I had absolutely nothing to gain. I literally left it for tomorrow because if I didn't I wouldn't have anything to do tomorrow (since we still don't have the damn parts X_X). Gah, I'm slowly going into the stupid "just look busy" mindset.

That reminds me! wtf is up with mandatory breaks? I get a mandatory 30 min unpaid lunch break with two 15 mins breaks. Either way 30 mins of my time punched in will be unpaid, even if I choose to work through those 2x 15 mins (didn't know that last week got screwed over 2.5 hours of overtime). At least this means I can take a legit 30 min nap any time I want during work (did it today felt freaking great).

About over time, I can't take it unless directly asked to X_X (didn't know this, but I guess this makes sense otherwise people would just set up camp at work). So, this means that I can only work 40 hours per week. This got me thinking that maybe I can work 10 hours per day and get Wednesdays off to rest and rock climb! I'm really hoping I'll be able to . My schedule would be perfect, but K*** says I shouldn't get my hopes up. I'll probably find out tomorrow from my manager.

gah rant rant rant I'm learning so much about the real world X_X.

Note from the future: breaks are now great. Why did I ever complain about them...

Day 4

February 27, 2014

Still no new parts for Device 1. So... still kind of stagnant. Learned more about refurbishing and assembly of Device 2. Assembled 8 chassis during K*** 's lunch break. He technically beat me though, since I still had to screw in one panel when he returned X_X.

We have 8 Device 2s due tomorrow (I think it's 8 >.>). Burn ins take about 3 hours per machine and we only have 3 stations... We were able to almost finish one this afternoon... Those boards are fucking hard to screw in. Tomorrow... will be hectic X_X.

So what happened to the guy before me?
-Career suicide. He browsed the web, worked extremely slowly, was completely disorganized, and talked back to the boss.
Well, hopefully I'll be better than that . I'm surprised that that last guy was even able to train K***.

I also managed to say hi to other co-workers today AND I introduced myself to another one!

Day 3

February 26, 2014

I finally met my supervisor today, and he was awesome (as every person named K*** is). He had a bit of a sleepy look, and totally not a morning person. K*** was still adjusting from coming back from vacation in Puerto Rico. Funny thing, he switched to his current position one week before leaving to PR... So we are both pretty new to this whole thing.

A little about my supervisor:
This guy has a pretty awesome background. After High School, he decided to work instead of going to college. After a couple jobs, he started a small job at the company his dad worked at (ionizer devices? they make computer chips or something). One day, a machine broke down and people were trying to fix it. Those people, went out to lunch, and K***wondered in and fixed the machine. Got hired for a better position shortly after. He started working at **(company)** at the lab or something. Didn't really like it as much, so he moved to the manufacturing department (3 weeks ago? I guess). He had done some overtime in this department, so knew a little bit about it. The guy is pretty awesome. Mechanical and electrical things seem to come very naturally to him. He is also very much into Matisyahu and has strong wanderlust.

So today, I learned a little bit more about the other machines/devices. However, we were both kind of... stuck. There really wasn't a lot to do since we still need more parts . Apparently he's ran into the same problems in the past. L**** (manager?) keeps bragging to the higher ups about how I'm making the devices so fast XD.

I should update my LinkedIn. Position: Executive Assistant to the Manufacturing Department Head! Totally legit.

Ah right... today's word was: manhandle.
"K***, how do I get the cover off this device?"
"Just manhandle it a bit. Don't worry, it won't break"
".... k..."

Day 2

February 25, 2014

>Surprise investors come to tour the lab; they comment on how organized my work place is (I was building 10 devices in assembly style at the time, organized parts everywhere spread across three tables. Everyone I texted had no faith in me and told me it was only my second day :C).
>CEO of company welcomes me (yay for small companies)
>Almost at the end of the day... ran out of device chassis. Ask coworker where I can find more. "That's the last box, you're making those things too fast"
>2 of my devices passed QC . 8 more need to be tested (takes two hours per device), and then 11 are assembled, but need to be programmed. Hooray, I may not suck at soldering.
>9.5 hours later... I can no longer feel my thumbs.

This job is awesome . The past two days I've assembled 21 devices. It's very relaxing and I have a nice window to stare at. My fingers are a bit... burnt from all the soldering I've been doing, specially my thumbs, but it's a nice new thing I learned. The first day, I learned the process of building the device. The second, I revamped time consuming steps and exhausted some device parts. It's a great job for someone lazy like me. "I don't want to unscrew 20 of these things... how about I attach it to a power drill!" "These wires are hard to attach... let's use a monkey wrench!" (yes, these were my solutions and they worked perfectly. I wonder what some of my coworkers thought as they saw me take the power drill and monkey wrench >.>)

“I choose a lazy person to do a hard job. Because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it.”

Bill Gates understands me

Tomorrow, my supervisor finally comes back to work and I get to learn new things and not be the only person working in the manufacturing department/corner .

Day 1

February 24, 2014

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svL3fhrtD1Y

>Wear a lab coat + touch hot things -> awesome
>8 hours later of assembling devices... I can't feel my fingers and burned my hand
>1.5 hours x2 of commute X_X
>Doesn't matter; have job

Day 0

February 12, 2014

Achievement Unlocked: Job Get

Introduction

After about 8 months of job searching, I finally found a wonderful company. The first job out of college was a completely new experience for me and I was extremely excited. Through the first month or so, I posted about my job a lot on facebook, so I could one day look back at the awesome things I learned and accomplished. It's gotten messy, disorganized, and somewhat buried under other posts. This blog is my attempt to organize the past and share humorous stories about work.

I'm not entirely sure what my official title is, but I've heard industrial assembler, manufacturer engineer, and design engineer. It honestly boils down to I make devices that analyze DNA (electrophoresis) and figure out ways to reduce build times and increase efficiency. The job is fun and relaxing. The work environment is amazing and my coworkers are all wonderful. The only complain I have is my ~3 hour commute every day -_- (there and back again).

Without further ado, I'll start from the beginning...
